Allenwood Celtic 3  vs  1 Walshestown FC (Match Report)

Date: 03.05.2012

Author: Damien Coyne

Allenwood got an early goal when Stephen Skelly put Conor Staines through and Staines finished with a cool placed effort to the keepers near post. Allenwood almost doubled the lead minutes later when Shane Curran saw his effort go off the post and wide.

Allenwood were reduced to ten men after 15 minutes of play when team captain Emmet Moore struck out at the Walshestown keeper and rightly saw red.

The home side defended well but Walshestown with a lot of the play went very close to getting the equaliser but a series of fine stops from Smullen in goals for Celtic kept them out and they were unlucky to find themselves behind at the break.

The ten men of Allenwood came out fighting in the 2nd half and played some nice passing moves through the midfield with Glen Cullen and Damien Wyse linking up well with Curran and Staines.

Allenwood strengthened their lead on 55 mins when another excellent set piece delivery from player manager Damien Coyne was headed to the back of the net by the lively Staines for his second of the game in his first start of the season.

Walshestown themselves were reduced to 10 men when their striker left the ground studs up in a two footed tackle in the 70th minute. They battled hard and went close with a number of set pieces which caused the Allenwood defense all sorts of problems.

And they got their reward with ten minutes remaining when another excellent delivery from a corner was only parried by the Allenwood keeper and knocked straight to the waiting feet of the Walshestown striker who buried it home from six yards. Game on.

Walshestown continued to pile on the pressure and in the closing minutes were unlucky not to equalise with a headed effort going off the crossbar and over much to the relief of a tiring Allenwood defense.

Walshestown pushing forward in search of the equaliser left themselves vulnerable at the back and this was exploited when Stephen Skelly collected the ball on the left wing in the 89th minute. He ran at the Walshestown defense beating two men before finishing with a low hard shot past the keeper to secure all three points for the home side.

Best for Allenwood were Mark Smullen in goals, Shane Smullen in defense, Conor Staines up front and man of the match Stephen Skelly in his first start of the season.
