Allenwood Celtic vs Newbridge Town - U10 - March 2013 - Friendly

On a perfect day for football our Under 10s travelled to play Newbridge Town of the Premier Division in a friendly game. Despite the pedigree of our illustrious opponents our lads put in a magnificent display in what was an outstanding game of football. The first quarter was evenly contested with James Smullen and Sean Stafford marshalling defence and Mark Dunne pulling off some excellent saves. However, just before the break and following a lot of pressure put on the Town goal by Ciaran Daly and Alex Lenehan, a great clearance by an excellent Town centre back lead to a great 5 man passing movement on the break which lead to Town scoring the opening goal of the game.

The second quarter was one sided as our lads totally dominated possession with Ruairi Hanlon and Jack O Brien outstanding but some stubborn defence and a number of great saves from the Town goalkeeper ensured that the score remained 1 -0 to Town at Half Time.

The half time team talk worked wonders as our lads came out for the start of the 3rd quarter fired up and ready to do themselves justice. Some great work by Jack O Brien down the right wing lead to a superb cross into the town box where Conor Gannon was on hand to hit an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net. Straight from kick off Jack O brien won the ball in midfield and again terrorised the left side of the Town defence and put in an excellent cross for Conor Gannon who turned and hit a 1st time shot that the Town Keeper pushed out for a corner. Stephen Carey took the resulting corner and played a fabulous ball into the heart of the Town penalty box. Ruairi Hanlon timed his run perfectly from midfield into the box and met the corner with a right foot volley that nearly took the net off. It was 2-1 to Allenwood Celtic at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter started poorly for our lads when within a minute, Newbridge Town equalised with a great run from the left wing and neat finish into the bottom right hand corner. Our lads however did as they always do; they tried even harder with Ciaran Daly, Stephen Carey & Alex Lenehan running the show in midfield and James Smullen Sean Stafford and Mark Dunne dealing with the Town breakaway attacks very well. However, eventually their efforts told as they tired in the last 5 minutes and Newbridge Town got an undeserved winner.

Overall, this was an outstanding game of football and a draw would have been a fair result. Best for Allenwood were Mark Dunne in goal, James Smullen in Defence, Jack O Brien in midfield and Conor Gannon up front
